Careers in accounting

There are many broad and varied career paths for accounting graduates. Many employers understand and value the challenging nature of an accounting degree and the business skills it provides accounting students.

There is also usually a shortage of experienced staff in the accounting and finance industries, as many skilled people move from specialised positions to senior management positions.

Some of the roles available in the accounting area include:

  • Chief Executive Officer
  • Chief Financial Officer or Financial Controller (for commercial enterprises)
  • Business Risk Manager
  • Entrepreneur
  • External Auditor
  • Assurance Specialist
  • Taxation Specialist
  • Management Consultant
  • Insolvency and Reconstruction Specialist
  • Internal Auditor
  • Treasurer
  • Government Accountant
  • Financial Analyst
  • Company Secretary
  • University Professor of Accounting
