Welcome from the Associate Dean (Research)

Academic research in Australian universities is built on three platforms: quality faculty, nationally competitive research funding and high quality research students. The faculty are the drivers of new research directions; the competitive funding ensures that, in a small economy where public research support is scarce, research funding is directed to the highest quality projects; and the emphasis on research students keeps ideas fresh and helps to ensure a future supply of researchers.

We are committed to undertaking high quality research that is relevant to Australia and the rest of the world, and has significant impact on knowledge through disseminating research outcomes and ideas and stimulating future research agendas for the academic community. We also seek to inform government policy and provide industry with new perspectives and directions by working in collaboration with business and government and producing research results with real world relevance. We have very strong links with the international research community and in recent years have placed increasing emphasis on engagement with Asia, believing that in coming decades, the region will become the dominant global force in business innovation.

We are at the forefront nationally for competitive research grants, publications and research degree completions. As we evolve, we continue to develop and build additional capabilities. The Australian School of Business is large and diverse, with many areas of research excellence located within our schools and research centres, and world-class scholars across a broad range of research areas.

The role of the Business Research Office is to determine the overall research strategy of the Australian School of Business and to provide support for academic staff and students in their research. Excellent research facilities are available, including 24 hour computer resources, databases and some financial support for research expenditure. Each school runs regular research seminars and workshops in which research students are encouraged to participate. There is also an extended visitors program which brings noted experts in particular disciplines to the Australian School of Business for extended periods of time.

In recent years the number of students enrolling in our graduate research programs has increased significantly. Several factors account for this increase including:

  • The strength of our PhD and Master of Philosophy programs
  • The appointment of several senior researchers over the last few years
  • An increase in the number of scholarships available to our students
  • Generous supplementary scholarships which make our stipends amongst the most lucrative in Australia

As well as attracting outstanding students from across Australia, we have been successful in recruiting high quality students from around the globe.

Committed to the pursuit of excellence in research, the Australian School of Business is a dynamic and stimulating environment in which to undertake postgraduate research. We all look forward to welcoming the next generation of research students to what is becoming a global fraternity of UNSW research scholars in the business disciplines.
