New president for prestigious Tourism Academy

Professor Larry Dwyer at the Australian School of Business (ASB) has been elected President of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism.

Larry Dwyer, from Marketing at ASB, says “I am delighted to have been voted the head of the world’s most prestigious tourism academy. I will use this position to further the cause of tourism in Australia, both domestically, and to markets overseas. This is a vital position with which I will emphasise better engagement of the Academy with the various stakeholders in tourism at government, institutional and individual level.”

The International Academy for the Study of Tourism is an international organisation created to enhance both theoretical and practical research in the field of tourism. Related objectives of the Academy are to further the scholarly research and professional investigation of tourism, to encourage the application of findings, and to advance the international diffusion and exchange of tourism knowledge.

Larry Dwyer is Australia’s most cited tourism researcher over the past decade, and will assume the Presidency of the Academy from the beginning of next year for a two year term. He says “the Academy can do more to nurture and mentor junior and emerging scholars and researchers in disadvantaged regions. I expect that these issues will drive my presidency in its first term.”

Formed in 1988, the Academy is incorporated as a non-profit organisation based in Hong Kong, with fellows elected based on their outstanding scholarly contribution to the field of tourism.

He adds “I acknowledge the privilege of leading an international network of highly accomplished scholars in the complex, interdisciplinary field of tourism. My agenda will involve working to develop alliances – both formal and informal - with various stakeholders including major industry institutions to fulfil the Academy’s potential to become better integrated into the ongoing scholarship, research and policy making that characterises tourism.”
