There’s something different about our Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Economics in 2010
We are pleased to announce that the Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) and the Bachelor of Economics (BEc) programs will be enhanced to incorporate new core structures, courses and majors in 2010. This reflects our commitment to ensuring students have the knowledge and skills required to succeed in a fast-changing business environment.
The Bachelor of Commerce
The Bachelor of Commerce is a highly valued business qualification that opens the door to a wide variety of careers. The core courses provide students with a general understanding of business fundamentals and are the building blocks for a career in business. Students then choose a further four courses from a prescribed list according to their interests.
BCom core courses in 2010:
- Accounting and Financial Management 1A
- Business and Economics Statistics
- Microeconomics 1
- Managing Organisations and People
Key enhancements:
- Students are required to complete four compulsory core courses, then choose a further four from six core courses offered, meaning that students will be able to do a broader range of subjects in their first year.
- A newly created management course (Managing Organisations and People) has been added as one of the four compulsory core courses, introducing students to organisational communication and management.
- The BCom program enables students to explore a range of disciplines before they choose their major/s.
The Bachelor of Economics
The Bachelor of Economics is a well respected professional qualification for a range of careers. The first year program provides students with the fundamental practical, theoretical and quantitative skills to understand the economic underpinning of business and finance. Students complete six core courses and two electives in their first year.
BEc core courses in 2010:
- Accounting and Financial Management 1A
- Business and Economics Statistics
- Quantitative Analysis for Business and Economics
- Microeconomics 1
- Macroeconomics 1
- Economic Analysis
Key enhancements:
- The BEc program now provides an option for students to undertake a mathematics or statistics major. These majors help students develop high level analytical and problem solving skills which are useful for economic policy roles in both the public and private sectors.
- A new core course (Economic Analysis) has been developed. This course addresses key areas of contemporary eonomics in short modules, providing students with an understanding of the diversity of economic study available to them and discussing real issues such as climate change and health economics.
The BCom and the BEc now benefit from distinctively different core courses for first year students. Furthermore, the expanded breadth of subjects studied in the first year of these programs enables students to make well-considered decisions about which pathway they wish to follow beyond their first year.
