Alumni PhD scholarship in Business
Australian School of Business, UNSW

 

A 3 year PhD scholarship is available to a student of Indian or Vietnamese origin to undertake a full-time PhD program in the Australian School of Business (ASB).

 

Eligibility
Applicants for the scholarship must be Indian or Vietnamese Citizens who will be full-time PhD candidates in any of the disciplinary schools of the Australian School of Business in 2010. Candidates must have either a four year undergraduate degree with honours class I in a related discipline, or a strong research master’s degree in a related discipline, or an equivalent academic qualification or level of experience.

 

Benefits and tenure
The scholarship provides an annual stipend of $20,000 tax exempt and payment of tuition fees for 3 years. The successful applicant must commence the scholarship and enroll for a full-time PhD before 5 March 2010.

 

Application procedure
Applications must be made on the official form for the ASB Research Scholarship. UNSW International Research Scholarship applicants and ASB Research Scholarship applicants who are unsuccessful will automatically be considered for this scholarship. There is no need for them to lodge an application for this scholarship scheme.

PhD scholarships funded by an ARC Linkage Grant LP0883398 - Managing Risk with Insurance and Superannuation as Individuals Age with industry partners APRA, PwC and World Bank

 

School of Actuarial Studies, The University of New South Wales

 

Up to 4 PhD scholarships commencing in 2010 and or in 2011 are available for Australian and international students in the Australian School Business in Actuarial Studies to carry out PhD research funded by an ARC Linkage Grant. The scholarship pays a tax exempt stipend currently $A30,000 per annum including Australian School of Business top up scholarship.  The scholarships are for 3 years full time, subject to satisfactory progress.

 

The main areas of research cover modelling and estimating longevity and morbidity trends and risks in a stochastic framework, quantifying financial risks surrounding longevity and morbidity risk, assessments of new products, including reverse mortgages and variable annuities, along with assessing appropriate solvency and risk management requirements including Basel II and Solvency II. The project takes on additional significance with the Henry Taxation review addressing Retirement Income and Longevity issues.

 

Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for a UNSW Local Research Scholarship or UNSW International Research Scholarship, if eligible.

 

The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence, research experience and/or research potential. Applicants should have completed the equivalent of an Australian four-year undergraduate degree with First Class or a High Second class Division 1 honours.

 

Further information regarding these scholarships is available from Professor Michael Sherris. Candidates will need to provide a proposal in the area of the ARC Linkage grant. It is expected that two of the scholarships will commence in session 1 2010 and 2 in either semester 2 2010 or semester 1 2011. Closing dates for semester 1 2010 scholarships is 31 October 2009 and for Session 2, 2010 is mid April 2010.

 

PhD Scholarship in Organisational Behaviour / Organisational Psychology 

School of Organisation & Management, University of New South Wales

 

A 3 year PhD scholarship is available under the supervision of Dr Markus Groth.

 

Requirements
Applicants should hold a degree of at least Honours 2/1 standard or equivalent (significant periods of research experience in industry may be equated to Honours 2/1) or Masters or equivalent. Ideally, applicants should hold a degree in Psychology, Management/Organisational Behaviour, or Human Resource Management, or a related discipline.


Applicants should have experience in research design and statistics and be interested and if possible have experience in one or more of the following research areas: (i) emotions at work, (ii) service management and customer service, and (iii) organisational psychology.

 

Project details

The project investigates the role of emotions at the workplace, especially emotional labour of employees in front-line service jobs. That is, service workers, and particularly health care professionals, are expected to consistently ‘produce smiles’ and provide friendly service and care while suppressing negative emotions (eg, anger or annoyance towards demanding customers or patients).


The project explores to what extent such practices impact employee engagement, well-being and job performance as well as how they affect the customer and patient experience.

 

Renumeration
This APA(I) scholarship is jointly funded by the Australian Research Council. The scholarship is valued at up to $30,000* pa, tax exempt and indexed annually with tenure of 3 years. The research grant may also cover related research costs.


The candidate will be enrolled full time in the School of Organisation & Management at UNSW.

Australian Leadership Awards

(ALA) is a new award under which the Australian Government offers scholarships and fellowships for current and future leaders from the Asia-Pacific Region. Find out more on the Australian Government Australia Aid website

 

Endeavour Awards/MPhil Supplementary Scholarships (offered in conjunction with Endeavour Awards) The Australian Government offers a scheme to support students from selected countries to undertake an Australian Postgraduate Research Degree or to do research in Australia towards a higher degree in the recipient's home country: Endeavour Europe.  

 

The Australian School of Business will offer recipients of the Endeavour Europe Awards who undertake a Master of Philosophy, a six month supplementary scholarship to assist students with the costs associated with the final session of enrolment.


The scholarship will cover tuition fees, overseas student health cover plus a living allowance of $2,000 a month for the final session of enrolment. These scholarships are automatically awarded on gaining the Endeavour Award so there is no need to apply separately.

Scholarships Offered by External Funding Bodies

Cooperate Research Centre Scholarships

The Australian School of Business has a major involvement with the Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Tourism (STCRC), the Capital Markets Cooperative Research Centre (CMCRC) and the Securities Industry Research Centre of Asia-Pacific (SIRCA).

  • Each of these centres offers scholarships for projects aligned to the research priorities of the individual centre
  • Scholarships are advertised on the CRC websites
  • Scholarships awarded by CRCs at the APA(I) rate currently at AUD$25,627 will be topped up to match the standard APA plus supplement rate currently at AUD$27,616

 

Opportunities for Research Fellows

Post-Doctoral Fellowship Supplementary Scholarships: Scholars who are successful in gaining a Vice-Chancellor's Post-Doctoral Fellowship at UNSW in the Australian School of Business will automatically be eligible to receive the Australian School of Business post-doctoral fellowship supplementary scholarship:

  • $10,000 pa top-up for 3 years to recipients of a Vice-Chancellor's Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Australian School of Business
  • No separate application is required, applicants should apply for the Vice-Chancellors Post-Doctoral Fellowships, details below


Vice-Chancellor's Post-Doctoral Fellowships: the University offers a number of Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships to attract outstanding post-doctoral scholars to conduct full time research at the University in any of its disciplines.


The Fellowships aim to advance the research activities of the University by bringing to, or retaining in Australia, promising scholars. The Fellowships will be available from January 2008 for a period of 3 years and must be commenced within six months of an offer being made.

International tuition fee payment for Associate Lecturers

  • The Australian School of Business offers tuition fee payment scholarships of up to 3 years duration to full-time international students enrolled in PhD studies at UNSW who are employed by the Australian School of Business as associate lecturers
  • International students who are also associate lecturers should complete an application form for tuition fee payment and submit it to Anne Gordon.
